Brass Wind Bells (Nousaku)

brass wind bells group header px

Nousaku in Japan manufactures brass wind bells through a collaboration with designers and using traditional techniques acquired from producing Buddhist altar fittings. These wind bells offer the finesse of material beauty and the clear ringing sound that brass produces.

Individually handmade by skilled craftsmen and featuring colouring’s that match the material, as in gold plating for ‘gold’, silver plating for ‘silver’, bronze plating for ‘bronze’, black nickel for ‘black’ and copper plating for ‘pink gold’.

Capitalizing on the casting, finishing, and colouring techniques developed over Takaoka’s 400-year history. These cast metal bells possess a traditional, decorative beauty, which often requires extremely refined and precise processing techniques despite their seemingly simple appearance.

Nousaku respects the wisdom of its ancestors, and preserves traditional methods while seeking to create new tradition.

Note: The wind catchers are made from Washi, a special Japanese paper hand made from the bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or the paper mulberry. ‘Washi’ is used in many traditional Japanese arts and also for vestments & ritual objects for Shinto priests and statues of Buddha. Washi is stronger and more weather resistant the normal paper.
