Create mesmerising soundscapes with handpans

The handpan is a member of the steelpan family. It draws inspiration from renowned musical traditions including the Trinidadian steelpan, Indian ghatam, Thai gong and Indonesian Gamelan. A Swiss company called PanArt was the first to adapt this concept, creating the original ‘Hang,’ a name they used for what is now commonly known as the handpan.

The Hang captivated a generation seeking a melodic, easy-to-play percussive instrument. Its popularity spurred many enthusiasts to craft their own handpans, partly due to the exclusivity of the PanArt Hang. And over the years a grassroots global community of handpan players and makers grew.

Crafted from two metal half-shells. It features a central “Ding” root note/tone field, encircled by a ring of at least seven higher notes/tone fields. Each drum is formed by hand-hamming with care.

How do I play the handpan?
Playing the handpan instrument involves using your hands to tap and use other various hand movements to resonate its surface. You can explore the different tone fields by tapping or gliding your fingers across them. You can experiment with different hand positions, dynamics and rhythms. The handpan is a fairly intuitive instrument that can be enjoyed by beginners and skilled musicians/percussionists alike.

Do I have to tune my own handpan?
Our high-quality, carefully selected handpans are precisely tuned and can be ordered in various tunings to suit your melodic needs. They are designed for longevity, so the tuning should remain stable for a long time with proper care and handling. However, if tuning is ever required we can suggest a qualified tuner.

How do I care for my handpan?
To keep your handpan in good shape, handle it with care and keep it dry. If it gets wet, wipe off any moisture with a soft cloth. Clean your hands before playing and wipe it down with a soft cloth after use. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for a long time. Some handpans may require oiling from time to time.

How are handpans made?
The process involves shaping two metal half-shells, which are then meticulously tuned and hammered to create a central “Ding” (root note/tone field) surrounded by additional notes/tone fields from the scale. The halves are joined, creating a resonant instrument known for its melodic and percussive qualities.

Who are handpans designed for?
Anyone can enjoy the soothing percussion notes of the handpan instrument. People who appreciate creating soft, melodic music will benefit most from this unique instrument. You might incorporate it into your meditation or yoga practice, or simply play it amongst friends or in solitude to bring a sense of peace to your surroundings.
