Kalimbas

A popular, contemporary version of Africa’s mbira

Kalimbas (pronounced “kuh-lim-buh”) are a popular instrument due to their melodious sounds, ease of playing and deep cultural and spiritual origins. A variation of Zimbabwe’s mbira or sanza, the instrument is technically called a lamellophone. It is also known as a finger harp, gourd piano or thumb piano. The Mbira was traditionally used as a ‘telephone to the spirits’.

Kalimbas look a little like a music box. They have a wooden soundboard with tiny metal lamellas (aka tines or tongues), which are plucked with thumbs or fingers to produce each note.

Uses
Due to their soft, soothing, relaxing sounds, kalimba instruments can be used for stress relief, meditation and relaxation and are a wonderful alternative to having a mobile phone in your hands. Many people want to know how to play a kalimba. As the instrument is pre-tuned, there’s almost no learning curve, making it a fun instrumentfor beginners.

Over time, you can learn to play simple melodies with the kalimba before progressing to more advanced tunes.

Musicians use the kalimba in live performances or recordings. It can be used as part of an ensemble, adding a distinctive touch to any musical arrangement. You can amplify your kalimba using a microphone, pick up or by connecting it to an amplifier or audio interface.

Care
Keep your kalimba in a dry area, away from moisture. Avoid any extreme temperatures. Clean it regularly using a soft cloth or brush to remove dust and debris from the keys.
