Singing bowls for elevated sound healing

These magnificent instruments are formally classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging from a string or attached by a handle, they sit resting on a flat surface, the hand or cushion. When gently struck with a special mallet, the rim vibrates to produce sound characterised by a fundamental frequency and usually two audible harmonic overtones. Alternatively, a ‘resonant mallet’ can also be used by gently applying pressure to the rim of the bowl and moving in a circular motion to create a ‘singing’ effect. Singing bowls are often used in mindfulness practices, such as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises.

All you need to know about singing bowls

How are singing bowls made?
Singing bowls are carefully crafted using a blend of metals, typically including copper and tin or more commonly brass. Skilled artisans heat, shape and hand-hammer the metal into a bowl shape. The finishing touches involve precise tuning, which is done through careful hammering to produce the desired harmonic resonance.

How do I play the singing bowl?
Playing a singing bowl involves striking or rubbing its outer rim with a padded mallet – you can shop our range of singing bowl mallets above. Gently circle the mallet around the rim, applying consistent pressure. You can experiment with speed and pressure to find the right combination to obtain the best sound.

How do I care for my singing bowl?
It’s important to take care when playing, moving and storing your singing bowl. Dropping or knocking the bowl may impact the sound quality, so be sure to carry it carefully and keep it out of harm’s way. To clean it, wipe it down with a soft cloth and avoid using harsh chemicals or scrubbing material that may tarnish or discolour the metal.

Who are singing bowls designed for?
Everyone can benefit from the relaxing melodies of the sound bowl. We commonly see yoga teachers, meditation gurus and those in the mindfulness space incorporate them in their practice. They are also wonderful for at-home use – to reduce stress after a long day at work or to create an atmosphere of harmony among friends or family.
