Your Guide to Tuning Forks

Tuning forks are a type of acoustic resonator that offer various effects depending on the tuning, but are often used for deep focus and relaxation. They have a two-pronged fork with the prongs formed from a U-shaped bar of flexible metal. When gently struck against a firm surface (e.g. the palm of your hand or knee) or an activator (e.g a rubber block or mallet), the fork resonates at a specific constant pitch. It then emits a pure musical tone once the high overtones fade out.

Where did tuning forks come from?
Our Planetware tuning forks have a similar history to the Paiste Planetary Gongs, which are precisely tuned to the orbital frequencies of celestial objects in our solar system. These vibrations (frequencies) have been made audible thanks to the work of Hans Cousto and a team of scientists and musicians and his discovery of the Cosmic Octave.

Team member Fritz Dobretzberger initiated the production of planetary tuning forks around this time. Twelve years later, along with Cousto, he founded the Planetware Infopool to share information about the Cosmic Octave.

Our other tuning forks are from Jonathan Goldman, an expert in sound healing and harmonics. His collection of tuning forks takes inspiration from different philosophies on frequencies. For example, the Solfeggio frequencies incorporate tones that are said to promote mind and body health. The use of these frequencies dates back hundreds of years and are mainstays of Western Christianity and Eastern Indian religions, chanted by the Gregorian Monks and in ancient Indian Sanskrit chants.

What are tuning forks used for?
Tuning forks are popular in sound healing and sonopuncture. During sonopuncture, they can create gently healing vibrations as they stimulate the body’s natural energy flow.

What are tuning forks made out of?
The two most common materials in the creation of tuning forks are steel and aluminium. Opinions vary about which is superior for sound healing, but both have their benefits. Steel is said to provide more accurate, stable frequencies while aluminium can produce more overtones which can lead to a more stimulating sonic experience. We offer both, sourcing our tuning forks from reputable brands such as Planetware and Jonathan Goldman.
