Shell wind chimes, handmade in Bali
These unique shell wind chimes are made using Capiz shells that are harvested, shaped and coloured by fishers-turned-artisans in Java. These natural beauties are then assembled in a fair-trade workshop in Bali.
Our seashell wind chimes are part of a long tradition in Java. Some 70 years ago, several fisher families moved from Madura to Java’s Eastern coast because of the profusion of sea life, where Capiz shells – or Jingle Oysters – grow like weeds in shallow sea beds.
Originally, the shells were only harvested for their meat but, during stormy weather, after mending their nets, these fishers began making handicrafts like wind chimes from the discarded shells. Now nothing is wasted.
All you need to know about Shell chimes
How are Shell wind chimes made?
After Capiz have been harvested for their meat, the round, jagged shells are soaked in water to clean and soften them.
Once they’ve dried, the artisans cut the shells into smaller shapes and add colour by immersing them in bleach and applying dyes to the surface of the shells, before the wind chimes are assembled.
Where do our Shell wind chimes come from?
Using Capiz shells gathered in Java, our Capiz shell wind Chimes, strands and chandeliers are all hand-crafted by artisans in a fair-trade workshop in Bali.
How can I play my shell wind chime?
If you hang your shell wind chime outside, the shells will make a tinkling sound in the breeze.
Where can I hang my shell chime?
Shell wind chimes can be hung outdoors or indoors. If you’re hanging your shell chime outdoors, choose a sheltered spot, where it can catch the breeze but won’t be buffeted by strong winds. Direct sunlight can fade the colour of the shells over time, so filtered sunlight is best.
How do I care for my shell chime?
Dust and debris can accumulate on Capiz shells. Keep them clean by gently wiping them with a soft, damp cloth or taking some mild, soapy water and gently cleaning the shells with a soft bristle brush. Be careful to avoid harsh chemicals.
While Capiz shells are durable, during extreme weather like heavy rain or strong winds, bring your shell wind chime indoors.
