Symphonic Gongs are renowned for their harmonic and universal sound structure. The Symphonic Gong, Paiste’s oldest and largest version of this ancient instrument, based on the Chinese ‘Chau Gong’, includes the impressive 60” and the extraordinary 80” gongs. Their complex overtones harmoniously balance with the fundamental note, creating a rich, symphony of resonant sounds.
Believed to be the oldest musical instruments in South East Asia, gongs have been played for thousands of years, noted for their intense and spiritual drumming in rituals and tribal gatherings.Today, Paiste’s Symphonic gongs are embraced by world-renowned musicians and are used in sound baths, sound immersions, yoga studios and meditation retreats.
When it comes to Symphonic Gongs, “symphonic” shouldn’t be confused with the orchestral definition, but with its harmonic sounds. Similarly, “universal” refers to “sound in its entirety.”
Individually handmade in Germany, Paiste Gongs are among the highest-quality gongs available in the world today. Paiste’s largest and oldest version of the instrument, the Symphonic Gongs, are crafted from nickel silver (an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel) and feature a slightly raised surface without a boss. Their harmonic and universal sound structure is distinguished by a fundamental note balanced with the instrument’s intricate overtones.
The sound of these gongs can be modified through the nature of the stroke, as well as the size, weight, and composition of the mallets. By altering the striking points, one can elicit a range of highs, lows, and diverse sound effects contained within the gong’s complete sound spectrum.

All you need to know about Symphonic Gongs
How do I play my Symphonic Gong?
The vibrations and harmonic sounds of Symphonic Gongs can be varied in a number of ways. By striking different points on the gong, you can alter the effect of the stroke, extract lows and highs, and explore various playing techniques. Experiment with mallets of different sizes, weights and types to discover new sounds.
How should I hang my Symphonic Gong?
Your Symphonic Gong should be hung with enough space to swing freely back and forth without touching the stand. Choosing the same size stand as your Gong will ensure this. A special suspension cord, which minimizes the transfer of vibrations to the stand, will be provided with your gong. Check the cord periodically for wear and replace it as needed over time.
How do I care for my Symphonic Gong?
Keep your gong dust-free by covering it with a soft sheet or cloth when not in use. You can also purchase a high-quality gong bag from us to protect your gong during transport. Remove light dust with a soft cloth and use soft gloves or a cloth to handle the gong to avoid fingerprints and introducing oil and dirt to the surface.
Symphonic Gongs come with a durable wax coating applied in the final stages of production. With careful handling, this coating will last a long time. Detailed care instructions will be provided with your purchase.
